Living with clear aligners when you're at work all day

Temecula's office is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 7 PM, so an adult in treatment can come in for a scan or progress check after work rather than taking time off. Coffee, meetings and meals

Anything other than plain water should be drunk with the aligners out. Coffee and tea can stain the plastic and, trapped against the teeth, the sugar or acid in a drink sits right on the enamel. A practical routine for an office day:

• Keep a case, a travel toothbrush and a small toothpaste in your bag or desk drawer.
• Group snacks and drinks into set breaks so the aligners are out for fewer, shorter periods.
• After eating, brush — or at least rinse well — before the aligners go back in.
• If you have a lunch meeting, the aligners come out discreetly and go straight into the case.

Speaking and the first few days

Many adults notice a slight lisp for the first day or two with a new set; it usually fades quickly as the tongue adjusts. Each new aligner can feel snug for a day or two — that pressure is the aligner doing its job.

Attachments and refinements

Some plans use small tooth-colored bumps bonded to a few teeth, called attachments, which give the aligners something to grip. And some cases finish with a short extra series of aligners to fine-tune the result. Both are normal parts of treatment. What happens at an after-work Invisalign consultation

• Your goals. What bothers you about your smile, and whether you have had braces before.
• An exam and X-rays. Decay or gum problems are treated before any tooth is moved.
• The digital scan. A wand-like scanner records every tooth in a few minutes — no trays of putty.
• The projected plan. How many stages, whether attachments are needed, and a written fee.
• Next steps. If you go ahead, the aligners are made from the scan and you come back to collect the first sets.

If you grind your teeth

Night-time grinding shows up on aligners as worn or cracked plastic. Mention it at the consultation; it affects how the plan is set up and what happens after treatment, when a retainer or night guard takes over.
