The American Dental Association's consumer site lists red wine, with coffee and tea, among the major causes of tooth staining. Its pigments settle into the surface of the enamel. For anyone who tastes wine regularly — at work or for pleasure — a few habits help:
- Sip water between tastings to rinse pigment and acid off the teeth.
- Wait before brushing right after wine; acid temporarily softens enamel, and brushing immediately can wear it.
- Keep up regular cleanings, which remove surface stain before it builds.
- If staining bothers you, a professional cleaning removes much of the surface stain; ask at your checkup.
For people who work in hospitality
Winery and restaurant schedules often include weekends and evenings. Temecula's office is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 7 PM, so a weekday afternoon or early evening is usually possible on a day off. For an emergency, call as early as you can.
What an oral cancer screening involves
Every exam here includes an oral cancer screening, and it takes only a couple of minutes. The dentist looks at and gently feels the tongue — top, sides and underneath — the floor of the mouth, the cheeks, the roof of the mouth and the throat, and checks the neck and jaw for lumps. Nothing about it is uncomfortable.
Between visits, the things worth having looked at are a sore in the mouth that has not healed within two weeks, a red or white patch, a lump or thickening, persistent hoarseness, or numbness in the tongue or lip. Most turn out to be harmless, but they deserve an examination rather than a wait-and-see. Care is with Dr. Henry Abraham, and PPO plans, Denti-Cal and IEHP are accepted.
