When a toothache kept you up, start early

Pain from an infected nerve is often at its worst at night, when you are lying down. Anthem Dental – Moreno Valley opens at 9 AM from Tuesday to Friday, the earliest start of any Anthem office, and at 10 AM on Monday — so a call as the doors open gives the front desk the whole day to find you a time.

The exam is with Dr. Henry Abraham: a look at the tooth, a digital X-ray, and a 3D cone-beam scan when a back tooth's roots cannot be seen clearly on a flat image. If a root canal will save the tooth, it is done at this office. Now and then a case is complex enough to be referred out, and you are told so at the exam. Spanish is spoken at the front desk, and the office is closed at weekends.

Getting to the office, and getting ready for treatment

The office is at 2712 Canyon Springs Pkwy, Suite 3, Riverside, in the Canyon Springs business park on the eastern edge of the City of Riverside. The city's plan for the district routes traffic in from two freeway interchanges, Day Street on State Route 60 and Eucalyptus Avenue on I-215. From Moreno Valley the 60 is the direct way in, and from Canyon Springs itself it is a short local drive. Free parking throughout the Canyon Springs plaza lot, with accessible spaces near Suite 3.

The week at this office

The office is open Monday 10 AM to 5 PM and Tuesday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, and closed at weekends. An appointment at opening leaves the rest of the day free, which helps if the tooth is tender afterwards.

Before the appointment

  • Eat beforehand: your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours afterwards.
  • Bring a list of the medicines you take, and your dental plan, Medi-Cal or IEHP card.
  • If you are anxious about the treatment, say so when you book; the front desk will make sure it is discussed before you start.
  • If you have IEHP and need a ride, arrange it with IEHP's Transportation Department at least five business days ahead for a routine visit.

When a tooth cannot be saved

A root canal is the way to keep a tooth whose nerve is infected, but not every tooth can be kept: one that is split below the gum, or too broken to hold a crown, is better taken out. The ways to replace it — a dental implant or a bridge — can be talked through later, at your own pace. For a sudden problem with any tooth, see emergency dentistry near Moreno Valley.

What happens in the chair

Once the tooth is completely numb, a thin sheet is placed around it to keep it dry and clean. A small opening in the top of the tooth gives access to the pulp, and fine instruments clean and shape each canal down to its tip. The canals are then disinfected, filled and sealed, and a temporary filling closes the opening. A molar has more canals than a front tooth, so it takes longer, and some teeth are finished over two visits. A crown, fitted over two further appointments, usually follows.

FAQ

Root canals in Moreno Valley — your questions, answered.

Can I come in before work?

Usually. The Canyon Springs office opens at 9 AM Tuesday through Friday and at 10 AM on Monday; ask for the first appointment of the day.

Can IEHP help me get to the appointment?

IEHP's Medi-Cal benefits include rides within Riverside and San Bernardino counties to Medi-Cal-covered dental visits. Book with us first, then call IEHP's Transportation Department at least five business days ahead for a routine visit.

What if the tooth can't be saved?

Sometimes a tooth is too broken or too weak to keep, and taking it out is the better choice. If so, the ways to fill the gap — an implant or a bridge — can be talked through later, without pressure.

Can I drive myself home afterwards?

Yes, after a root canal done with local numbing — you are awake throughout. Your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours, so wait before eating anything hot or chewy.
