When a deeper cleaning is needed

If the measurements show pockets where bacteria have settled under the gumline, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) cleans the root surfaces themselves. It is done with numbing, often one side of the mouth at a time, and followed by shorter intervals between cleanings until the gums settle.
